Executive Committee Member Bios
Robert Levy, MD is board certified in Addiction Medicine and Family Medicine. He is an assistant professor of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota and a fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine having done a fellowship in Addiction and Chronic Pain at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he also practices full-spectrum family medicine including obstetrics. He is Treasurer of the Minnesota Society of Addiction Medicine and was elected to a repeat term on the American Society of Addiction Medicine Public Policy Committee in 2018. He recently received a grant from SAMHSA to help Minnesota address the opioid epidemic. In 2018 we was awarded the Minnesota Society of Family Medicine Teacher of the Year award. His interests are in addicted health care professionals, chronic pain management, the integration of addiction treatment into primary care, and addiction in pregnancy and the neonatal period.
David Peter, MD, MPH, is an addiction medicine and family physician working at the VA as well as at the University of Minnesota (UMN). At UMN he is the assistant program director for the addiction medicine fellowship and associate faculty, also working with the Medical Discovery Team on Addiction (MDTA) as a clinical research liaison. At the VA he is the Primary Care Pain Champion for the site, helping veterans who have been on chronic opioids taper down or transition to safer alternatives. He also has a substance use disorder clinic within the primary care setting. He is board certified in addiction medicine and family medicine.
Ashwin George, MD, offers his medical expertise and compassionate demeanor to patients at Valley Medical and Wellness, which has offices in Burnsville, Minneapolis, and Woodbury, Minnesota. Triple-board-certified in internal medicine, palliative care, and addiction medicine, Dr. George is committed to helping patients overcome addiction so they can live full, quality lives.
As a Board-Certified Addiction Medicine specialist, Dr. George provides treatment for opioid dependence, heroin addiction, alcohol, benzodiazepines, and methamphetamine dependence. He also offers careful, considerate, and effective addiction counseling services. He is one of the few physicians certified in SUBOXONE® treatment for narcotic addiction in Minnesota. Dr. George has more than seven years of experience working as a hospitalist, managing cancer pain for palliative care patients.

Jeremiah Fairbanks, DO
Jeremiah Fairbanks is addiction medicine and family medicine physician through Allina Health. He completed his family medicine residency and addiction medicine fellowship through the university of Minnesota and is board certified in both. Through Allina he serves on the opioid committee in addition to treating substance use disorders both through the outpatient addiction medicine clinic and through his primary care clinic. He serves on the planning committee for ASAM. He is very passionate about community based resources and currently serves on the board for a local peer recovery group and is typically working on community based projects in the Twin Cities.

JoAn Laes, MD is an addiction medicine physician at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, focusing on inpatient addiction medicine and toxicology consultation as well as outpatient treatment of opioid and other substance use disorders. She is a core medical toxicology faculty for the Minnesota Poison Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, medical director for Missions Inc. Detox facility in Plymouth, Minnesota and 1800 Chicago detox facility in Minneapolis, MN and a nocturnist at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids, Minnesota. She is board certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Toxicology, and Addiction Medicine. She completed internal medicine residency at Hennepin County Medical Center and medical toxicology fellowship at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota.
